A pioneer of culturally sensitive care

The Founder and current President of BMH, Beverley Mack Harry has a long and distinguished career in the field of human services. Ms. Harry founded Beverley Mack Harry Consulting Services Inc. in pursuit of the ultimate mental-health stability for all, and can arguably be counted among the pioneers of New Age thinking in social work and mental health.

She recognized early on — some thirty years ago — that there was a lack of understanding and awareness of the mental hardships of immigrant families and people of color. Drawing on her own experience as a teen immigrant from Guyana, South America, she created an agency founded on cultural awareness and sensitivity, which she holds paramount to each person’s mental-health success.

In 1990, she was also a trailblazer in conducting psychotherapy services in the home for children in foster care, recognizing that they too were subjected to insensitivity toward their cultural background as well as the intrinsic pain of separation. Like immigration, the loss of something or someone dear can have a tremendous impact on mental health if not addressed.

Ms. Harry holds a Master’s Degree in Social Work from CUNY/Hunter School of Social Work, a Post-Graduate Degree in Family Therapy from Fordham University, and a Master’s Degree in Special Education from CUNY/Brooklyn College. Her work in the NYC Department of Probation, along with administrative roles in the NYC HRA Foster Care Assessment system and the Request for Proposals Department, uniquely positioned her as the path-layer she is today. For the past thirty years she has provided psychotherapy to countless individuals and trained hundreds of clinicians in the same philosophy of culturally sensitive, quality service.
